This site sets no cookies of its own. What it stores in your browser is a light or dark theme preference and, if you make one, your analytics choice (below), kept locally and never sent anywhere.

Where analytics are enabled they are Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, and, on the production site, Google Analytics 4, which asks first. A dialog on your first visit offers “Accept required” and “Accept all”, given equal weight; “Accept required” gives you the whole site, which is identical whichever you pick, and a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser is treated as a refusal without asking. Until you accept, Google Analytics runs in Google’s Consent Mode v2 with every storage type denied: it sets no cookie, keeps no persistent identifier for you, and receives only anonymised, cookieless page-view pings. If you accept, it sets two first-party cookies, _ga and one beginning _ga_, which Google expires after two years, and tells your visits apart by a random identifier; Google then processes that measurement data under its own terms. Advertising storage and ad personalisation stay denied whatever you choose, because this site runs no Google advertising. “Cookie choices” in the footer reopens the choice at any time; declining or withdrawing there stops new cookies and removes the ones already set.

Three forms collect data, all optional. The corrections form stores what you write, and an email address only if you choose to give one, so that we can reply and so that the response time can be measured. The weekly digest stores your email address, uses double opt-in, and carries an unsubscribe link in every message; unsubscribing deletes nothing else because nothing else is held. Email alerts store your address and the vessels or companies you chose to watch. Each watch is confirmed separately through a link sent to the address, so nobody can attach alerts to an address they do not control, and every alert carries a link that deletes the address and all of its watches. Nothing you watch is inferred from anything else you do on the site. No address is sold, shared or used for anything but its stated purpose. All three forms are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile and a rate limit.

Server logs are processed by Cloudflare as our hosting provider. If advertising is ever introduced it will be on directory pages only, below the content, and never on explainers or vessel pages.

Individuals appear on this site only when named in an official sanctions designation, and only with the facts that designation contains. No crew lists, no addresses beyond what an authority published, no aggregation of personal data from other sources. See the corrections page to raise a problem.
